Federico Garcia–Lorca, whom we could call an innovative artist if ever there was one, was e man firmly entrenched in the tradition and culture of his native Andalusia. With his friend Manuel de Falla, he contributed a lot towards the revival of the « Cante Jondo » (the very expressive music of flamenco) at a time when that folk art was descending into oblivion. The old Spanish folk songs, collected and harmonized by F. Garcia–Lorca, revive for us a lost noble folklore which is an important testimony to Iberian culture. These songs, published only after the death of the poet, unveil the musical genius of Lorca and, better still, his passion for the music of his country.
